Evening event on floating platforms

Floating Stages and Event Platforms: What Exists

An event planner has the brief: a summer launch party on a lake, with a band playing from the water and guests on the shore. She searches for a floating stage and expects to find inflatable options, the way you’d find inflatable docks and islands. What she finds is mostly steel and plastic pontoons put together by marine contractors. This page explains what’s really out there for events on the water, where inflatable platforms fit, and where they don’t, so you can brief a supplier with the right expectations.

In short: the floating stages we found are rigid pontoon systems, not inflatables: VolkerMarine in the UK, for example, builds event structures from modular pontoons. On the inflatable side, Tiki Factory lists a drop-stitch platform for special events, and commercial aquaparks serve resorts as entertainment. We found no documented inflatable stage, wedding platform or floating bar, so we don’t describe one.

Floating stages: rigid pontoons, not inflatables

VolkerMarine Services, part of VolkerWessels UK, says it builds “a variety of floating structures for events” from modular pontoon systems, for events at sea, on rivers and on lakes across the UK, from floating stages to sport and hospitality events and brand showcases. Its pontoons (the range is called Linkflote) are rigid modular units, not inflated fabric.

That fits what a stage asks for: a large, stiff, level floor that holds band equipment, lighting rigs and moving people for hours, with engineering behind the load figures. None of the inflatable makers in our research publishes a stage product or a rating for that kind of use. If you’re planning a floating stage, ask marine contractors for a pontoon solution with engineered loads and the permits your venue needs. Our comparison of inflatable vs rigid floating platforms explains the general trade-offs between the two families.

Inflatable platforms listed for events

One inflatable product in our research is explicitly listed for special events: Tiki Factory’s Inflatable Platform 150, a double-skin drop-stitch platform offered in 200 x 400 cm and 300 x 600 cm sizes, with side rings to link platforms together and to anchor them. The listing doesn’t publish a load rating. Treat it as a floating deck for small event set-ups, such as a photo spot, a demonstration area or a hospitality corner, and ask the maker for its rated load and the number of people it’s meant for before planning anything around it.

A trade-show listing from an OEM manufacturer also says it offers custom sizes and logos for rental and resort projects. There were no specifications to check, so we note it only as a sign that branded custom platforms can be ordered.

Entertainment that is documented: aquaparks and floating play

Where inflatables clearly do serve entertainment businesses is in play. Aquaglide sells a modular commercial aquapark range to resorts, campgrounds and wake parks, and trade press reported installs at Novotel Twin Waters and Bli Bli Aqua Park in 2014. These are permanent-season attractions with professional anchoring, not one-day event hire, but they’re the best-documented inflatable entertainment on the water. Our water trampolines and water parks page explains how they’re put together.

Questions to ask any event platform supplier

  1. What load is the platform rated for, and how many people standing at once? Get it in writing.
  2. Is it rated for equipment as well as people (speakers, lighting, a bar counter)?
  3. How is it anchored or moored for the site’s depth, wind and current, and who installs it?
  4. Which permits does the venue need from the harbor, lake authority or local council? Rules vary by place.
  5. What does the insurer require, and does the supplier carry its own cover?
  6. How do guests get on and off safely, and what rescue cover will be on the water?

Events and floating stage questions

Are floating stages inflatable?

The ones we found are not. VolkerMarine, for example, builds event stages from rigid modular pontoons. We found no inflatable stage product with published ratings.

Can I rent an inflatable platform for an event?

Possibly from local hire companies, but we haven’t verified any rental listings. Ask the hire company for the maker’s rated load and its insurance before booking.

How many people can stand on a floating event platform?

Only as many as its maker or engineer rates it for. Don’t estimate from the size: Tiki Factory, for example, doesn’t publish a figure for its event platform.

Can a consumer swim deck be used at a public event?

Check the warranty and your insurer. Many consumer warranties cover personal use only, and an event changes the load, the crowd and the liability.
