The anchor bites, the engine goes quiet, and the question on every boat is the same: who’s first in? On a boat with a cramped swim step, the answer is “one at a time, carefully”. On a boat with an inflatable deck floating off the stern, it’s everyone: kids jumping, someone sunbathing, a paddle board launched without a wobble, and an easy place to climb back on. If you’re shopping for a swim platform for boat days, this is the buying guide: what to measure, what the specs mean, what’s in the box, and which questions to ask before you pay.

In short: measure where the platform will be stored and how it will tie to your boat, choose a drop-stitch platform rated by its maker for your crew (8 x 5 ft to 10 x 10 ft is the usual range), and check the pressure, attachment points, bumpers, pump, packed size and warranty. Plan how people get from the water back onto the boat, and only use it at anchor with engines off.
New to these platforms? Our overview of boat swim platforms explains what they are, how they’re built and what you can do on them. This article is the shopping checklist.
Swim platform for boat: the buying checklist
1. Measure storage before size
An inflatable swim platform spends most of its life packed. Measure the locker, the space under a bench, or the trunk it will ride in. Makers state packed sizes and weights: Island Hopper says its 10 x 6 ft Yacht Dock packs to 40 x 16 x 14 in at 53 lb, RAVE’s 10 x 10 ft Aqua Dock weighs 69 lb, and BOTE’s 7 x 7 ft Hangout Dock weighs 35 lb. If the packed platform won’t fit on board, it’ll stay in the garage.
2. Size it by the maker’s rating
| Platform | Size | Rating (maker) | Pressure | Weight | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solstice 8 x 5 | 8 x 5 ft x 6 in | 4 to 6 people recommended (listing) | Not on listing | Not on listing | 1 year |
| BOTE Hangout Dock 7 | 7 x 7 ft x 8 in | 1,050 lb | 6 to 8 psi | 35 lb | 2 years |
| Island Hopper Yacht Dock | 10 x 6 ft x 6 in | 1,500 lb | 8 to 15 psi | 53 lb | 5-year seam warranty (register within 30 days) |
| RAVE Aqua Mat LTD 18 | 18 x 5 ft x 4 in | 8 adults, 1,500 lb | 5 psi | 56 lb | Limited lifetime (personal use) |
| RAVE Aqua Dock 10 | 10 x 10 ft x 6 in | 10 adults, 1,800 lb | 5 psi | 69 lb | Limited lifetime (personal use) |
| BOTE Hangout Dock 10 | 10 x 10 ft x 8 in | 2,100 lb | 8 to 10 psi | 83 lb | 2 years |
Read the rating as what the maker tested and stands behind, and never work out your own from the size. If a people figure and a pound figure both appear, go by whichever is lower for your group. Long, narrow mats like the RAVE Aqua Mat sit alongside a boat well; square decks give more room to sit in a circle.
3. Check the build: thickness, pressure, seams
Almost all boat swim platforms are drop-stitch, 4 to 8 in thick. Pressure is set by each maker for its own product, from 5 psi (RAVE) to 15 psi (Island Hopper), and you should buy a gauge if the pump doesn’t have one. Look for how the seams are made (Island Hopper describes heat-welded seams and a 1000-denier rip-resistant outer layer) and for a textured, non-slip top. For how drop-stitch works, see what is drop-stitch.
4. Count the attachment points and bumpers
A platform that will sit next to a hull needs somewhere to tie lines and something soft between it and the boat. RAVE’s Aqua Dock 10 has eight D-rings and ten handles; Island Hopper’s Yacht Dock has stainless side D-rings and rubber corner bumpers; RAVE’s Aqua Mat has two D-rings underneath. More points let you tie the platform at two corners so it doesn’t swing.
5. Plan the way back aboard
The platform makes getting out of the water easy; getting from the platform up onto the boat is a separate problem. Most families use the boat’s own swim ladder. Island Hopper sells a soft rope ladder separately for its platforms. If your boat’s ladder is short or awkward, a telescoping stainless ladder on the boat’s swim step may help (see the cards below).
6. Check what’s in the box
RAVE includes a dual-action hand pump with both its Aqua Mat and Aqua Dock; Island Hopper includes a double-action hand pump with a gauge, straps and repair patches; the Solstice listing includes a bag and pump. Inflation times stated by makers range from about 8 minutes (Island Hopper) to 5 to 10 minutes (RAVE Aqua Mat) with the hand pump. A 12 V electric pump is worth considering if you set up at every stop.
7. Read the warranty terms, not just the length
Warranties on the platforms above run from one year (Solstice) and two years (BOTE) to a five-year seam warranty (Island Hopper) and a limited lifetime warranty for personal use (RAVE). The conditions matter as much as the length. Island Hopper requires you to register the product within 30 days. RAVE’s warranty excludes damage from over- or under-inflation, snags and punctures in normal use, sun fading and improper storage. And a personal-use warranty means just that: a recreational platform isn’t sold for charter, rental or work use, whatever its rating.
8. Think about where you boat
Island Hopper says its platforms are built for lakes, marinas and open water, in fresh or salt water. In salt water, rinse the deck, valves and D-rings with fresh water after each trip and let everything dry before packing. In waves or a swell, a platform tied to a boat moves differently from the hull, so use it only in calm, sheltered anchorages.

Inflatable swim platform prices
Branded drop-stitch platforms were listed from about $350 (Solstice 8 x 5 on Amazon) and about $500 (RAVE’s 15 ft Aqua Mat) to about $1,550 (BOTE’s 10 x 10 ft) on the makers’ sites in October 2026. Unbranded 10 x 6 ft decks sell for well under $200 online, usually with shorter warranties (one we saw carried 90 days). Yacht-scale platforms, like NautiBuoy’s 4 x 2 m Voyager 800 (listed at €5,995 ex VAT by a Greek retailer), are another category; see yacht platforms.
Using it safely at the stern
- At anchor, engines off. The U.S. Coast Guard says never to sit or hang on the back deck or swim platform while engines are running, and warns that carbon monoxide can stay at dangerous levels after an engine stops. The CDC advises staying at least 20 ft from boats running an engine or generator.
- Keep it off the hull and away from the propeller. RAVE’s manual notes that tethering to boats raises the potential for injury and says to keep distance from engines and propellers.
- Life jackets for kids and weak swimmers, sized for each child, and an adult watching.
- Bring it aboard before you move. These platforms aren’t towables.

Boat swim platform buying questions
What size inflatable swim platform should I buy for my boat?
The largest one rated for your crew that you can store on board. For bowriders, 7 x 7 to 8 x 5 ft platforms pack small; pontoons and larger boats often carry a 10 x 6 or 10 x 10 ft.
Is a cheap inflatable swim platform worth it?
It can be for occasional use, but check the warranty and whether the maker publishes a pressure and a rating. Branded platforms state both and carry warranties from one year to limited lifetime.
Do inflatable swim platforms come with a pump?
The ones above do (RAVE, Island Hopper and the Solstice listing include a hand pump). Some larger platforms don’t, so check the box contents.
How do I attach a swim platform to my boat?
With lines from the platform’s D-rings to the stern cleats, at anchor with engines off, with bumpers or fenders between platform and hull. Use two lines so it doesn’t swing.
Can a dog use an inflatable swim platform?
Many do; the Solstice listing mentions dogs, and RAVE suggests its Aqua Mat for dogs. Trim claws and check the deck after use.
